New Work and thoughts

March 19, 2009

My favorite room in the apartment has been presenting endless fascination for my mind and eyes. As I continue to play with the possibilities in this extremely intimate space, I am realizing the potential it has is terrific. For my subjects and myself the space has become everything from naughty to sacred and from a spiritual confessional to a secret beauty parlour. It holds the mystery we all feel when we shower in other peoples bathrooms and the undeniable relief and relaxation that warm water brings no matter where you go. It’s where you bear your scars with no fear and sing to yourself only to hear a reverb of your own voice, muffled through water, as your face gets distorted … when a gentle stream runs over the soft curves of your face.

Inspired by Kutiman

March 19, 2009

Kutiman, takes samples of video clips from youtube, layers them and turns them into pieces of genius. I am currently addicted to this one. The syncopation of audio to video is great as well.  Everyone’s sample gets a plug! If you stick through the end of this song, he uses a sample from a Chopin piece and layers it with this woman’s haunting voice. It’s a very rewarding experience. Kudos to Kutiman.

Sikhs in America

March 19, 2009

A good friend and photographer Fiona Aboud has a brilliant and completed book project called Sikhs in America. I’m proud of her and her work. The subject matter is close to my heart, one of my closest friends growing up was a Sikh and to see light shed on the Sikh tradition and culture juxtaposed with the American lifestyle is great. Feast your eyes. Click on image to get to Fionas Blog!

Lat year when I visited the magnum office while working for Steve McCurry. On the wall was a print of an image that I found myself staring at incessantly. A year later, it has still not lost its impact and as I was confronted by it I decided to post it for everyone’s viewing pleasure. The picture is taken by Jonas Bendiksen. picture-10

Injured Mumbai

March 16, 2009

A hobbyist photographer, recent MIT graduate and good friend of mine Chris Lyddy took a recent trip to Mumbai, India and spent some time going all over the city. Chris came back with some unforgettable memories and some excellent imagery. Some of the images that particularly stirred me, were of Leopold Cafe. In operation since circa 1871, this place has aged like fine wine. A regular hang out spot in downtown Mumbai for hipsters and foreigners alike, It was one of prime affected sites in the recent terrorist attack that took place in the city. Two gunmen sprayed the joint with automatic fire that killed seven people at the cafe, including two waiters, and injured several others. Though business has sprung right back up for the cafe… the bullet holes live to tell the tale of some nasty events that tried to zap the shine away from my city. Here is a excellently written article that shows off the spirit of the Mumbaikers in Dec 2008 and what some of them were thinking only 24 hours after the massacre took place.
